So the child decided not to nap today. Which means my brain is fried. And therefore incapable of fleshing out any of the posts sitting my drafts. I went searching for #NaBloPoMo writing prompts but didn’t particularly like them. Then I found Writing Prompts That Don’t Suck. It seemed particularly relevant to my current state of mind. So, without further ado…
One morning Lucy awoke to the sound of her pre-programmed coffee maker sputtering and dying. There would be no coffee for her morning commute to work. “Oh well,” she thought, “I’ll just stop at the coffee stand outside of my office building.” She managed to dress herself (mismatched socks) and hop the bus downtown. She arrived at her building groggy but otherwise OK.
To her horror, she found the coffee stand was closed.
Increasingly irritated, she pulled out her phone to find the closest Starbucks. She walked the three(!) blocks, stood in line for 20 minutes and finally got her Americano. Just having the caffeine in her hands perked her up and she headed back to the office. But, of course by this point, she was late. Her boss was not happy about it. She had managed to salvage her uncaffeinated good mood up to this point. But her boss was in a bad mood and after yelling at her for being late, her mood finally succumbed. She went about her daily, mundane tasks but all she could think about was the way her boss had treated her – a good employee with a good record – for being late this ONE time. She was preoccupied the rest of the day with all things she should have said in response.
Finally it was quitting time and Lucy simply could not wait to get home, get in her jammies, have a glass of wine and watch her favorite TV show. And that’s exactly what she did.
Only then did she realize that her favorite show was not on tonight. Because it was election day. And she had forgotten to vote.
Turns out a lot of people’s coffee makers were hacked by the Russians that day. Including her boss’s.
And THAT is how Donald Trump was elected POTUS.
You didn’t realize this was a horror story…did you?
